ADAPT/2000 Year 2000 Conversion Tool Set

ADAPT/2000 is a powerful, integrated and configurable tool set for removing date-related constraints in legacy COBOL applications. It is designed to help organizations with most aspects of a "Year 2000" conversion, including:

• Source code Impact Analysis for identifying date dependencies and estimating project scope
• Job Control Analysis, for identifying date dependencies and links between JCL and applications and data files
• Creating and maintaining a system-wide Data Dictionary for date-dependent elements
• Automated generation of File Conversion Programs
• Automated conversion of COBOL Copybook and Source Code Logic

Comprehensive and Integrated
Not every aspect of a Year 2000 project can be fully automated, but ADAPT/2000's rules-based paradigm, powerful code parsing and code generating capabilities, and library of date processing routines, provide developers with a comprehensive set of integrated utilities that minimize manual intervention.

Flexible and Portable
The ADAPT/2000 toolset is designed to run from almost any open systems platform or workstation, including Microsoft Windows, Windows '95, NT, DOS and DOS networks, Digital VMS, Open VMS and most UNIX systems.

While many Year 2000 utilities focus only on the IBM mainframe environment, ADAPT/2000 is also able to address a wide range of COBOL dialects and file systems, including mainframe and proprietary minicomputers.

For mainframe developers, ADAPT/2000 provides a workstation-based approach, allowing source code and JCL to be offloaded for Year 2000 adaptation. Data is accepted in flat sequential format, with either EBCDC or ASCII encoding. For mainframes and other proprietary systems, data conversion programs can be optionally created for host execution.

Impact Analysis, Planning and Data Management
The ADAPT/2000 Data Dictionary Builder & Manager is a rules-based Impact Analysis utility that parses existing COBOL code and copybooks to identify date and date-dependent fields. A default list is created, based on user-defined rules, which include:

• "Include" data name masks, with wild card and pattern matching
• "Exclude" data name masks, with wild card and pattern matching
• Field edit characteristics to look for, such as PIC S9(6) COMP-3
• Almost any Date format

An easy-to-use interactive field editor enables developers to confirm the applicability and format of each field, and to add or delete fields as needed. A system-wide data dictionary is created, along with a cross-reference of date field usage, by program element and line number. ADAPT/2000 will also identify date fields in Working Storage, and in redefined data areas, and include these in the data dictionary. An interactive Data Dictionary Editor allows developers to add and modify file, record and field details to complete the description of any date-related entity, including multiple-record definitions and filters.

ADAPT/2000 produces a comprehensive list of reports for analysis and project planning, including:

• Impacted Files and Records List
• Field Details List with group and record level owners
• Usage Cross Reference by Field, with source code relationships (such as MOVE, COMPUTE etc.)
• Usage Cross Reference by program element (program, copy book) with line by line detail
• Impact Analysis summary statistics including line counts, impacted line counts, and project duration and cost estimates.

Automated Data Conversion
The ADAPT/2000 Data Converter significantly reduces the amount of manual intervention needed to perform data conversion, bridging and aging. Based on user-defined rules for new century and aging date storage, the Data Converter automatically:

• Creates new data dictionary definitions, recalculating field and record sizes
• Builds data conversion and bridging programs and run scripts
• Generates new copybooks and FD's for any date-dependent elements
• Generates data aging programs for testing or for implementing a fixed or sliding window

Because it is data dictionary based, the Data Converter is able to accurately perform the data conversion process, fully aware of redefines, multiple record types and rules, filler space and other data attributes.

Source Code and Logic Modification
The ADAPT/2000 Source Code Converter is designed to provide a high level of automation, coupled with complete flexibility in implementing changes to application logic. Developers can choose whether to simply mark impacted source (using user defined comments templates); or to let ADAPT/2000 modify the code based on the operations performed; and whether or not to replace custom date logic with routines from the A2K Date Processing Library. ADAPT/2000 supports both date expansion and a fixed or sliding window approach. Key components of the Source Code Converter are:

• The code parser, which uses the extensive field and program element cross reference to mark or modify code
• The FlexEdit code editor, a powerful source code editor, with search, replace, copy, paste and multiple window (under Windows) capabilities
• The A2K Date Library, with routines for date conversion, aging, arithmetic, display formatting and validation, with a rolling 10,000 year window, and user-defined cutoff year for date conversion

Whatever the degree of automation chosen, ADAPT/2000 Code Converter leaves a complete audit trail of any changes made in both the source code itself, as well as in an audit log file.

Other Utilities
ADAPT/2000 rounds out the tool kit with an impressive array of additional utilities, all based on the central data dictionary, and useful for performing additional maintenance activity on modified data files. These include:

• The Easy Query visual report generator, which can be used to generate comprehensive reports and queries on both the actual data files, as well as to modify and add to the ADAPT/2000 analysis reports, which are provided in query script source form
• The Freeform Query generator, a powerful scripting language for reporting and generating batch file update programs to perform additional maintenance as necessary (for instance, initializing fields to certain values in special cases)
• The Forms and Windows visual maintenance program generator, which will build interactive file maintenance and search programs for ad-hoc maintenance on the data files
